Ranji Trophy: Prashant Chopra scores most runs in a day of Indian first-class game in 67 years

Chopra started the onslaught from the word go and dominated Punjab, who were without the experienced duo of Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh. Priyanshu Khanduri’s early wicket didn’t pressurise Chopra as he built a partnership with captain Sumeet Verma but Punjab’s Abhishek Verma sent him back to the pavilion. Later, Chopra and Paras Dogra (99*) took the team’s responsibility and at the end of the day they post 459 for 2.

Punjab’s formidable pace attack comprises Sandeep Sharma, Manpreet Goni and Barinder Sran, was made to look ordinary by Chopra’s aggressive unbeaten knock of 271 off 289 balls, which included 37 boundaries and a six.

This, however, wasn’t the first time Chopra scored a double ton in the tournament. He had hit 237 at a fiery strike rate of 98.34 against Haryana last year.

The record of highest scores on a day still holds by Bhausaheb Nimbalkar, who during his epic marathon knock of 443 for Maharashtra in 1948-49, had scored 277 runs in a single day, reaching 301 from overnight score of 24.
