VIDEO | Virat Kohli left completely baffled after Starc’s good length bouncer goes over Paine’s head

The MCG offered a docile pitch for the Boxing Day Test and apart from a few odd deliveries, it was quite easy for the batsmen to take on the Aussie bowlers. However, a surprise awaited Virat Kohli when a ball took off from the good length spot and bounced above Tim Paine’s head for a bye four.

The early signs from the MCG pitch were not promising for the bowlers, but Pat Cummins was still able to extract some bounce off the wicket to give Hanuma Vihari a working over before he fended a short ball into the slips. That gave Mitchell Starc ideas and when he saw all his conventional plans thrown out of the window, he tried bowling a bouncer, and incidentally, he did that in the most eventful over of the day.

Starc got the first delivery of the 87th over to sharply come in to beat Kohli's defence on the inside and hit the front pad flap. Perplexed by that, the Indian skipper tried driving the next delivery against a ball that held its line straight through but ended up edging to Tim Paine, who dropped the chance, to give his counterpart a lifeline. Starc didn’t lose his patience and decided to bring something new to the table and bowled a good length kicker which brought Kohli to his knees and the ball rose so much that Paine failed to touch it despite jumping the highest he could. It may sound made-up, but the ball almost went for a six.

It surprised everyone, to that extent that even Starc couldn’t control his laughter, but Virat Kohli’s reaction was priceless. The Indian skipper was completely perplexed before going back to his crease to face the next delivery, probably waiting for the over to get over.
