The West Indies players were fined 80% of their match fees in the first ODI against for maintaining a slow over-rate as they four found to be four overs short within the stipulated time allowance. West Indies put up an impressive performance in Chennai as they thumped the hosts by 8 wickets.
After putting up a strong fit in the T20 series, West Indies started the ODI series in style with a thumping win over India in Chennai. But the visitors faced the repercussions of maintaining a slow over-rate in the match as they were fined 80% of their match fees.
ICC match referee David Boon imposed the penalty after match officials leveled the charge against Kieron Pollard-led West Indies side who were found four overs short of their target after time allowances were taken into consideration.
In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for players and player support personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20 percent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time. As such, the team has each been fined 80 percent of their match fee.
Pollard pleaded guilty of the action as he accepted the fine levied on his team. Having sealed the series opener by 8 wickets courtesy tons from Shimron Hetmyer and Shai Hope, the teams will collide in Visakhapatnam in a day’s time in the 2nd ODI.
