Former Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin has been elected as the president of the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) as he trumped his nearest opponent by 100 votes. While the 56-year-old cricketer polled 173 votes in his favour, his opponent Prakash Chand Jain got only 73 votes.

Cricketer-turned-politician Mohammad Azharuddin has been selected to be the chairman of the Hyderabad Cricket Association after he put his name for nomination for the second time for this role. While his nomination was rejected a couple of years ago, the former India captain once again applied for the president's post of the Hyderabad Cricket Association earlier this month. Son of former cricket administrator P R Man Singh, Vikram Man Singh had put their name as nominations for the vice-president's post.

After applying, Azharuddin has addressed to media and said that he wants to work harder towards the betterment of cricket in Hyderabad. "I want to take inputs from everybody and work for promoting cricket. I want to do something for districts also (towards growth of cricket)," Azharuddin told PTI.

However, back in 2017, Azharuddin's nomination paper for HCA president's post was rejected by the returning officer on the grounds that he failed to produce proof of BCCI lifting the ban imposed on him for his alleged involvement in match-fixing.

Azharuddin, who represented India in 99 Tests and 334 ODIs, has also served as the member of parliament from Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh.
