The term ‘nervous nineties’ found an echo again as Yashasvi Jaiswal looked in a hurry to complete his hundred in the final Test against England at The Oval. The opener wanted to complete a third run to bring up the three-figure mark, but a calm Karun Nair sent him back to avoid a potential runout.
Night Watchman Akash Deep played a crucial knock as he got to his maiden Test fifty with a four of Gus Atkinson in the 38th over. Though the pacer soon departed after a solid-looking 66 off 94 balls, Jaiswal carried the innings forward as India walked into lunch at 189/3 with the southpaw unbeaten on 85.
In a big blow to the visitors, skipper Shubman Gill was dismissed off the first ball after lunch, with Karun Nair joining the Indian opener in the middle. Jaiswal, who was looking in fine nick till then, was bitten by the nervous nineties bug as the batter looked in a hurry to bring up his milestone.
He tried uppercutting a short ball from Josh Tongue in vain before chasing a short and wide ball to miss yet again. The opener suddenly looked jittery with every passing ball making him uneasy. The batter played an expansive square drive off Atkinson in the first ball of the 51st over, while on 97, and took off for the moon to complete two runs in a flash.
With only the hundred in his mind, the young batter turned for a third run, but a sensible Karun Nair sent him back. Jaiswal looked agitated and was caught telling, in the stump mic, his senior partner that there was a third run. Though the throw from the deep was wayward, it came in quickly as soon as Jaiswal started the third.
It would have been tricky had the third run been attempted, but it was not to be, as Jaiswal completed his century with a quick single off the very next ball. Twitteratti was on the edge before praising Karun’s calmness that saved the side a wicket.
Words exchanged!

Not a great partner
Karun Nair not being a great partner with YBJ, so fidgety and barely talking to him. In the previous over Jaiswal told him off for not informing that the third man had moved finer after he missed an upper-cut, observes Kaushik. {CRICBUZZ}

He did well
Karun Nair did well by not responding to Jaiswal when he was on 99 and wanted to take the 3rd one. You don’t want to argue with the player when he is on 99 even though the call for the 3rd one was wrong.

Nair just nodded to whatever Jaiswal said in anger and went on with it.
TBF
Tbf there were 3 in it, Karun Nair wasn't quick enough & that is why Yashasvi Jaiswal got upset.

Not happy
Jaiswal is not happy with Karun nair and rightly so. He is just so passive, clueless and lost on the crease.

Sad
The only games where the pitch was tough were the 3rd Test and this 5th Test and surprisingly Shubman Gill failed in both
