Young defender Nitesh Kumar has been named as the skipper of UP Yoddha in their bid to win their maiden Pro Kabaddi League trophy in the upcoming seventh season of the event. The player, like the franchise, will be participating in only his third season and was named last edition’s best defender.

Having made their debut in the fifth edition of the Pro Kabaddi League two years ago, UP Yoddha has had a decent run so far and had managed to reach the playoffs in their very first season. Owned by the GMR Group and based in Greater Noida, the 5,000-seater SVSP Sports Complex in the city acts as their home arena and they finished third last year.

The franchise will be taking part in its third season of the league this year and ahead of their opener against the Bengal Warriors on July 24 in Hyderabad, they released a statement during an event.

“UP Yoddha's team captures the warrior spirit of Uttar Pradesh and its players are ready to give their blood, sweat and tears in the battlefield. Nitish Kumar will be the captain of this side this season," they were reported saying by TOI.

Nitesh Kumar made his debut for the team as a 19 year old and had a breakthrough season last year. A find from the Future Kabaddi Heroes programme, he became the first defender to win a hundred points from tackles in a single edition, consequently being awarded the best defender award for the sixth season.
