Ben Duckett and Joe Root combined for a big stand to anchor England's chase against Windies in the first ODI at Edgbaston, as per AI

As per AI, England's batting depth would prove to be too much for the West Indies in the first of three ODIs, at Edgbaston on May 29. Big knocks from Keacy Carty and Shai Hope will take the Windies to 289/7 but half-centuries from Ben Duckett, Joe Root, and Jos Buttler shall prove decisive.

‌Pitch & Weather

The Edgbaston pitch produced an ideal ODI track with early pace and bounce for the seamers giving way to a phase of perfect batting conditions, before the spinners came into play in the latter stages of the encounter as the pitch wore dow and dried. The weather was equally cheery, as a sunny and clear sky greeted the players for the first international white-ball game of the English home season.

Toss & Conditions

West Indies won the toss and opted to bat first.

Match Report

Shai hope won the toss in Birmingham and opted to bat first with openers Brandon King and Even Lewis. The duo got good starts after a cautious beginning against the swinging and seaming new Kookaburra to survive the powerplay before Brydon Carse dispatched Lewis to hand England the opening breakthrough. Lewis fell soon after after striking five boundaries and a maximum in his 42-ball 38, as Adil Rashid and Jacob Bethell constricted the scoring rates severely. However, Keacy Carty and Shai Hope remained patient for their chances and pounced on any loose deliveries, extending their brilliant run of form in exemplary fashion. Just when their stand had ticked past 100, Bethell struck to provide his team a crucial breakthrough and then capped off a brilliant bowling performance with Amir Jangoo's wicket, leaving the Windies at 185/4 with 15 overs to play. Nevertheless, Carty kept plundering along after a 170-odd in his previous ODI against Ireland. Even though he fell agonizingly short of another ton, company from Justin Greaves (28 off 22) and Matthew Forde (15* off 12) helped set a target of 290.

In response, the gamble of Jamie Smith opening seemed to pay instant dividends when he struck two early boundariesbut Jayden Seales struck soon enough to break bludgeoning 34-run stand between Ben Duckett and him. However, the wicket only brought Joe Root to the crease and triggered a long wicket drought for the visitors. Spin or pace, nothing seemed to bother the duo as they stitched together 140 runs at almost run a ball. Yet, Gudakesh Motie brought the Caribbean outfit reeling back into the contest by dispatching both within one over, even though the hosts remained well placed 174/2 after 30 overs. Alzarri Joseph ignited further hope by scalping Harry Brook for cheap too on the York's captiancy debut, but Jos Buttler (58* off 49) and Jacob Bethell (42* off 38) quickly doused all ambitions with an invincible century stand to seal the deal with nine balls to spare.

Player of the Day

Ben Duckett took home the Man of the Match honours for his 85-ball 78, top-scoring for England to set the stage for a successful chase of 290 with nine fours and a maximum to his name.
