‌New Zealand white-ball skipper Mitchell Santner has been ruled out of the three-match T20I series against Australia, which will start from October 1. Michael Bracewell will be leading the 14-man squad in the absence of the 33-year-old left-arm spinner.
Santner began leading the Kiwi side from November 2020 and has maintained a brilliant record as a captain with a win rate of 57.69 % in T20Is and 66.67 % in the ODI format. These numbers also show why he will be missed in the upcoming T20I series against Australia. New Zealand head coach Rob Walter has also opened up on the unfortunate circumstances regarding the 33-year-old cricketer and what he expects from Bracewell as a leader.
“Never nice to lose your skipper. But these things do happen. And Michael has already been the captain of this team and did a great job against Pakistan. So fully confident in how he will lead the team,” Walter said as quoted by ESPNCricinfo.
Though the absence of Santner might be a big blow to the side, apart from him, other key players will also be missing out on the series due to injury concerns. The other players who will be missing the iconic series are express paceman Adam Milne and Lockie Ferguson, who have made way for Ben Sears and Kyle Jamieson in the squad. Glenn Phillips and Fin Allen are also among the injured players who will miss out on the series against their Tasmanian rivals.
