AFG vs SL | Efficient Kusal Mendis shadows blistering Nabi heroics as Afghans crash out of Asia Cup

Afghanistan exited Asia Cup in the group stages itself, at the Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Thursday, after losing by six wickets against Sri Lanka. A 20-ball fifty from Mohammed Nabi took the Afghans to 189/7 but Kusal Perera's unbeaten 74 off 52 balls saw the Lions chase it down in 18.4 overs.

In response, Kusal Mendis slammed three fours in the first two overs to get an ideal start to the chase but Azmatullah Omarzai sent Pathum Nissanka packing soon after to seize back momentum. Nabi added to the misery with Kapil Mishara's wicket in the final over of the powerplay, albeit frequent boundaries off Mendis' bat kept the score afloat at 53/2 after six. Along with namesake Kusal Perera, the duo kept finding the odd-expensive over to counter the squeeze being applied by the likes of Rashid and Nabi but just as the partnership neared the 50-run mark, Mujeeb nicked behind Perera for a 28-ball 20 to inject life back into proceedings. 74 thus remained to get in 48 balls, which became 42 off the final four after a 12-ball 17 run cameo from Charith Asalanka. However, with the match on a knife edge, Noor failed to contain the scoring and got hit for 17 by Kamindu Mendis before a 15-run Fazalhaq Farooqi over practically shut off any chances off an Afghan victory. Fittingly, Kusal provided the decisive blows with back-to-back deliveries in the penultimate over to finsh on 74 off 52 as Sri Lanka won with six wickets and eight balls to spare.
