Left-handed batters are always a treat to watch, and Washington Sundar yet again proved why during his innings against England at The Oval on Saturday. The Indian all-rounder came up with a stunning assault against Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue to complete a blistering fifty in the second innings.

‌India had an excellent start to the third day of the fifth Test against England at The Oval in London with overnight batters Yashasvi Jaiswal and Akash Deep extending their partnership to 107 runs. Night watchman Akash Deep brought up his maiden fifty in Test cricket before getting dismissed at the stroke of lunch.

Jaiswal, however, continued to reach his sixth Test hundred in the second session, with Ravindra Jadeja yet again chipping in with a priceless half-century. But Jadeja and Mohammed Siraj were dismissed in the same over by Josh Tongue, with India’s lead at 334, leaving Washington Sundar in the company of Prasidh Krishna for the last wicket.

Sundar, who started watchfully to reach 17 off 27 balls, admirably shifted gears in taking India to a commendable position. First, he hoisted Gus Atkinson over deep mid-wicket to bring up his first six of the innings before launching into Josh Tongue’s shorter deliveries for two more maximums in the next over.

England were failing miserably in getting the southpaw of the short ball, similar to the first innings. Two more fours off Atkinson in the next took him one shot away from a magnificent fifty. And the all-rounder brought up his half-century in some style.

He smashed a length delivery on the middle stump from the pacer over the mid-wicket fence for another huge six. The bowler was battered as the shot sailed into the stands, and Washington Sundar pumped his fist in ecstasy. The crowd acknowledged his wonderful cameo as he soaked it in while waving his bat towards the dressing room.

Twitter was in awe of the young batter’s shot-making ability as he notched up a 39-ball 50, with the last 12 balls he faced fetching 35 runs.
