Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the defending champions, might be on sale ahead of the IPL 2026 season. If the reports are true, the team is expected to get high bids for new ownership, as they hold a spot among the most valued IPL teams.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the defending champions of IPL 2026, are now all set for the next season. The team has already started its preparations for the upcoming season, eager to win the title once again. But at the same time, of the team being put up for sale for new ownership.
Such claims have been made by Lalit Modi, who was the first Chairman of the tournament. On his Instagram account, he claimed that the RCB franchise is likely to be sold out and get new owners ahead of the next season. Being the defending champions, RCB will be able to set new benchmarks if it is sold.
Since the Royal Challengers Bengaluru had won the IPL, there were reports of the team likely to be sold. At that time, fans did not believe in the same, as even the RCB team denied such rumours. But with Lalit Modi making some bold claims, things might get real this time.
RCB is currently owned by United Spirits. This is a subsidiary company of Diageo Plc Limited, and has owned the team for a long time. However, that the company is now likely to get the team off its balance sheet and get new owners.
A week after RCB had won their first IPL title, such rumours started to appear on the internet. It was also said that the valuation of the team will start from 2 billion US dollars. However, the reports have been unverified, and there was no official report or proof for the same.
Lalit Modi, however, took note of such rumours, and maybe he started an investigation of his own. Now, he thinks that the RCB franchise is likely to be put up for sale by the owners ahead of the IPL 2026 season. After the stampede, the team faced a negative impact due to the proceedings of their sale.
Now, since their major issues have been solved, . He also mentioned that when he was the Chairman of the IPL, United Spirits tried various times to sell the team. Now, it comes at the right time, as RCB won its first-ever IPL season a few months ago.
Along with that, the fact that RCB is the most valued IPL team should not be ignored. If the company decides to sell it off, they will be able to attract huge bids for the same. Lalit Modi also said that Citi Bank will be the primary bidder for the team, and has been interested in getting them.
When the reports of RCB being put on sale came out, the company acted quickly on the same. With it coming out immediately after the Bengaluru stampede, . But, United Spirits, the team's owner, informed the BSE about the same.
In a regulatory filing, they said, “This has reference to your email communication dated 10th June 2025 seeking clarification from the Company on media reports in relation to potential stake sale of RCB. The Company would like to clarify that aforesaid media reports are speculative in nature and it is not pursuing any such discussions.”
But this statement from the company came in the month of June, when RCB had won the trophy. However, they have not responded to the statements which have been made by Lalit Modi. With RCB and United Spirits’ statements on the same being awaited, fans are eager to know whether the franchise will be sold or not.
