Match Report

A cool and pleasant evening at Lord’s saw London Spirit ride on David Warner’s fireworks and Liam Dawson’s miserly spell to notch a convincing six-wicket win over Trent Rockets in The Hundred Men’s 2025 campaign. Rockets struggled to accelerate on a pitch that rewarded clever variations, while Spirit’s chase was built on a solid platform from their openers.

Winning the toss, the Rockets skipper David Willey backed his batters to post a competitive total. Opener Tom Banton began brightly, punching Olly Stone through point and pulling Jamie Overton for a six. The wicketkeeper-batter hit five fours and a six to top-score for his side with 38 from 24 balls. Joe Root anchored alongside him, but Spirit’s bowlers kept the rate in check. Dawson’s canny left-arm spin accounted for Root and Tom Alsop, with his accuracy forcing false strokes from both batters. However, Rehan Ahmed seemed to enjoy his newfound role in the top order with an entertaining cameo of 27 from 17 balls. But the Rockets crumbled after Rehan’s dismissal, pegging them back to 142/8 at the end of their allotted 100 balls. Dawson ended with impressive figures of 2/14 in his spell of 20 balls, with Olly Stone and Jamie Overton also picking up two wickets.

Warner looked in ominous form for Spirit as he continued from where he left off in the last game. Skipper Kane Williamson played the perfect foil as the home side ended the mandatory powerplay of 25 balls at 54/0. Ferguson’s raw pace briefly halted the Spirit’s progress, as he nailed Warner with a sharp bouncer before castling Smith. At 105/4, there was a ray of hope for the Rockets to continue their unbeaten run, but Ashton Turner and Sean Dickson calmly navigated the chase, rotating strike and punishing the loose deliveries. Turner sealed victory with a cover-driven four, as the side reached 143/4 with nine balls to spare. Ferguson was the pick among the Rockets’ bowlers with figures of 2/22 in 20 balls.

Player of the Match

David Warner was adjudged the Player of the Match for his 56 off 33 balls, his third consecutive fifty in the tournament, that set the tone for a comfortable chase.
