Match Report

St Kitts and Nevis Patriots edged out Guyana Amazon Warriors by six runs in a thrilling CPL contest at Warner Park in Basseterre on Saturday. A mix of aggressive top-order batting, led by Evin Lewis, and a clinical display of spin bowling in the middle overs by Waqar Salamkheil proved decisive in the home side’s second consecutive win this season.

Choosing to bat first, SKNP came out with clear intent. Evin Lewis took charge, punishing anything short or wide with crisp pulls and drives, hitting five fours and three sixes, racing to 44 off 25. Andre Fletcher played anchor at the other end, but his dismissal triggered a mini collapse, with Kyle Mayers and Rilee Rossouw falling in quick succession. Just as Guyana’s spinners were trying to tighten things up, Alick Athanaze counter-punched with deft sweeps and lofted drives, his 38 off 24 crucial in regaining momentum. Jason Holder’s unbeaten 21 and Goolie’s late cameo pushed the Patriots to a competitive 181/6. Motie was the standout bowler for the Warriors with figures of 2/27, while Shamar Joseph also chipped in with two wickets.

Guyana’s chase began steadily, with Shai Hope finding gaps regularly during the powerplay. He scored five fours and a six during his innings of 41 off 28 balls and his association with Shimron Hetmyer rebuilt the visitors’ innings after the fall of two wickets. The left-handed batter launched into the Patriots’ seamers with four towering sixes and three boundaries in his 31-ball 52 knock. At 125/3 in the 15th over, the Warriors looked favourites, but left-arm wrist spinner Salamkheil’s guile turned the tide in the home side’s favour. His dismissal of Hetmyer proved the game’s turning point as Naseem Shah’s searing yorkers and Fazalhaq Farooqi’s well-disguised slower balls in the final overs restricted Guyana to 175/8. Salamkheil ended with figures of 3/26 while Naseem and Farooqi picked up two wickets.

Player of the Match

Waqar Salamkheil was adjudged the Player of the Match for his match-winning spell of 3/26 that halted Guyana’s surge.
