Match Report
India stamped their authority on the first Test at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, crushing the West Indies by 334 runs. Shubman Gill’s twin knocks and relentless pace bowling from Bumrah and Siraj proved decisive in a match where the visitors never looked settled.
Shubman Gill opted to bat after winning the toss, and his decision paid off in style. Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul continued to make merry at the top of the order with yet another 100-plus partnership. The left-hander hit 16 fours and two sixes in his fluent 118, while Rahul scored a patient 72. Captain Gill continued his purple run with yet another century as he top-scored for the home side with a commanding 156. He smashed 18 fours and three sixes as India amassed a mammoth 487. Though the West Indies’ pace trio of Jayden Seales, Anderson Phillip, and Justin Greaves bowled with heart, their lack of consistency allowed Indian batters to dictate terms, with Seales being the pick among them with a spell of 4/112.
When the visitors batted, Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah were relentless with new-ball bursts, reducing them to 67/4. Alick Athanaze (45) and Shai Hope (23) tried to consolidate, but Jadeja’s consistency from one end and a disciplined seam bowling meant WI folded for just 196, conceding a massive lead of 291 runs. Siraj picked up 4/56, while Bumrah had 3/39.
India batted with confidence again as Jaiswal (68) and Gill (92) piled further misery on the Windies bowlers. With the lead swelling beyond 500, Gill declared at 274/6, leaving WI an improbable 566-run chase with more than a day to play.
Despite Athanaze’s enterprising 62 and Chanderpaul’s stoic 54, West Indies never looked in the hunt. Bumrah (4/62) and Siraj (3/61) bowled with venom, rattling the middle order and extinguishing any resistance. India wrapped up victory in the final session of day five to go 1-0 up in the two-match series
Player of the Match
Shubman Gill was named Player of the Match for his 156 and 92 in both innings that powered India to a huge win over the visitors.
