Shamar Joseph

In what seems to be a big blow for the West Indies, the star pacer Shamar Joseph is set to miss the upcoming two-match Test series against India due to his injury. Young uncapped pace-bowling all-rounder Johann Layne has been called up to replace Joseph in the WI squad for the Tests against India.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) announced Johann Layne as Shamar Joseph’s replacement, with a post from their official X handle (formerly Twitter).

“Johann Layne has replaced Shamar Joseph in the squad for the test series against India. Joseph has been ruled out due to an injury and will be re-evaluated ahead of the Bangladesh limited-overs series,” read the X-post shared by CWI.

The nature of Joseph’s injury is still uncertain, which is forcing the Caribbean cricket board to re-evaluate it ahead of the white-ball series against Bangladesh. Notably, Joseph has been one of the star performers for the Caribbean since he made his debut in the Tests. He has scalped 51 wickets in 21 innings of 11 Tests so far, including four four-wicket hauls and four impressive five-wicket hauls. The major highlight of his short but impressive Test career was a match-winning seven-wicket haul against Australia to seal the game for the West Indies at the Gabba in Brisbane.

On the other hand, young pace-bowling all-rounder Johann Layne is eyeing his Test debut for the West Indies in the upcoming two-match Test series against Shubman Gill’s India. Layne has impressed with his brilliant bowling in his First-Class career, scalping 66 wickets in 34 innings of the 19 FC games, including three four-wicket hauls and four five-wicket hauls. Besides that, he has also scored 495 runs with the bat in 32 innings, with two half-centuries, and has gone unbeaten on six occasions. So, he could be a brilliant fit to replace Joseph in the high-stakes Test assignment against India.
