‌Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to put the Men in Blue into bat in the last game of the Super Fours. The Lions got an early wicket of Shubman Gill, who was a victim of a stunning return catch by Maheesh Theekshana in the second over of the game. Despite the early shock, Abhishek Sharma continued to put pressure on the Lankan bowlers with his aggressive and free-flowing strokes and completed his third half-century of the tournament in just 22 balls. With these explosive strokes, the left-handed opener ensured India finished the power play at a strong position with the score reading 71/1. The runs were coming thick and fast for India until the Lankan spinners managed to get some respite with the wickets of Suryakumar Yadav and Abhishek in the middle overs. While the Indian skipper was caught plumb in front of his stumps by Wanindu Hasaranga, Sharma’s knock of 61 off 31 came to an end in the ninth over by Charith Asalanka. Though the couple of wickets might have put the Indian team in a spot of bother, Tilak Varma and Sanju Samson formed a 66-run stand to keep the runs flowing. Though Samson was eventually dismissed after a decent knock of 39 in the 16th over, India were still in a good position with the score at 162/4. The Lankans got a chance to come back in the last four overs as Hardik Pandya was dismissed cheaply in the 17th over after a beautiful catch by Dushmantha Chameera off his own bowling. However, Varma and Axar Patel ensured they added another 40 runs for the fifth wicket to take India to a massive score of 202/5. This was the first time a team crossed 200 in the tournament, with Tilak remaining unbeaten on 49 off 34 deliveries and Axar contributing with a cameo of 21 off 15.
