India women start off their World Cup campaign with a 59-run win against Sri Lanka Women in the first game of the Women’s World Cup on Tuesday. Deepti Sharma and Amanjot Kaur's half-centuries rescue the team after a mini-collapse as Lankan batters failed to chase down total in Guwahati.

IND- W beat SL-W by 59 runs

Sri Lanka Women won the toss and elected to field first in the opening game of the World Cup and got an early wicket of Smriti Mandhana, who was dismissed in the fourth over by Udeshika Prabodhani. Despite the terrible start, Harleen Deol and Pratika Rawal steadied the ship towards the end of the power play before the weather gods interrupted the game with the score reading 43/1. The rain gods finally showed mercy and the game was reduced to a 48-over game, and the two batters were cruising along well with a 67-run stand before Inoka Ranaweera broke the partnership in the 20th over with a wicket of Rawal. The experienced left-armer did not stop there as she came back in the 26th over and dismissed three key batters in Deol, Jemimah Rodrigues, and Harmanpreet Kaur to leave the Women in Blue in a tricky position at 122/5. The Lankans seemed to be in control of the game, especially after Richa Ghosh was dismissed cheaply by Lankan skipper Chamari Athapaththu, but Deepti Sharma and Amanjot Kaur brought the Women in Blue back in the game with a crucial seventh-wicket stand which took the score from 124/6 to 210/6 in 40 overs until rain came to spoil the party again. Fortunately, the rain stopped and only one over was lost in the process and the two batters continued to build the partnership.  The 103-run stand finally ended in the 44th over as Kaur was dismissed on a score of 57 off 56 as she fell victim to a stunning catch by Gunfratne at deep mid-wicket. However, Deepti Sharma and Sneh Rana ensured the runs kept coming at a quick rate and ended the first innings on a score of 269/8. While Deepti scored 53 runs before being dismissed on the last ball of the innings, Rana remained unbeaten on a score of 28 off just 15 deliveries as the Lankans were set a target of 271 in 47 overs

The Lankans had a decent power play despite the early wicket of Hasini Perera, who was cleaned up by Kranti Goud in the seventh over. The Lankan skipper and Harshitha Samarawickrama steadied the ship after the dismissal as the score read 45/1 after nine overs. The two batters continued to accumulate runs and put on 52 runs for the second wicket until Deepti ended the skipper's knock of 43 in the 15th over with a toe-crushing yorker. As soon as the partnership was broken, the Lankans’ scoring rate started to drop. The situation went from bad to worse as a couple of more wickets fell, with Samrawickrama getting dismissed by Shree Charani in the 23rd over and  Amanjot getting the wicket of Gunaratne in the 24th. This put the Lankan Lionesses in a tricky situation with the score reading 105/4. The Lankans' hopes started to dwindle as Deepti got another couple of wickets to add salt to the wounds as the Women in Blue got the were in control of the game after 29 overs with the score reading 140/6. Though Nilakshi de Silva tried to keep the game alive with a quickfire 35-run knock, Rana negated the threat with a couple of wickets as she dismissed Nilakshi and Sugandika Kumari. With the score reading 184/8 in 37 overs, it was a matter of time for the Lankan innings to end. The final rights were finally performed as Charani and Rawal get the last two scalps as the Lankans were finally bowled out for 211 and India Women won the game by a 59-run margin.
