AUS-W vs NZ-W | Twitter reacts as Halliday crushes maximum second time of asking but King has final say

Perhaps no bowler loves getting smashed more than wrist-spinners, given the wily operators know it merely presents a window of opportunity for them to snare a scalp. Such was the story during the Women's World Cup in Indore on Wednesday when Brooke Halliday got served up perfectly by Alana King.

Australia put forth a remarkable recovery in their World Cup opener against New Zealand at the Holkar Stadium in Indore as they set their trans-Tasman rivals a daunting 327 to chase on the back of a rapid Ashleigh Gardner century that bailed them out from 128/5. The White Ferns found themselves in a similar position in the second innings, requiring over 200 runs still at nearly 10 an over. With Sophie Devine anchoring along, the onus to go for broke fell on Brooke Halliday and the batter seemed to be up for the task until a perfect set-up by Alana King ripped her out of the action.
King returned for her second spell in the 30th over, with the score 116/3 and Halliday batting on 16 off 34 deliveries. The southpaw had the leggie lined-up pre-emptively, as evident by a huge attempted slog sweep to a flighted delivery on leg stump. However, Halliday failed to connect and was left muttering criticism at herself, the smirk on her face betraying the ball was their for the taking. Nevertheless, King persisted with her plan but just went a little straighter with hopes of eking out an LBW, only for Holliday to clear her front leg once again and go gung-ho. This time the Kookaburra met the meat of the bat and travelled well beyond the boundary for a huge maximum, sparking energy back into a chase that seemed to be petering out. King went legside again, only to be thumped for yet another four in the midwicket region as the tables seemed to be tilting but little did the batter know this was all part of King's plan. To cap off the over, King stuck to the line but dropped her length just a little -- full enough to make the high-flying Halliday swing her bat again but short enough to thwart her effort. The plamn worked to perfection as Phoebe Litchfield settled under the ball and grasped the simplest of catches, pegging back New Zealand once again at a crucial juncture of the encounter.
Twitterati could not be more entertained.
